Iconic Signage

HAND PAINTED MURAL, MANCHESTER CITY CENTRE, DUCIE STREET.

The job was commissioned by a firm called Watkin Jones Homes who are still building now. I painted this sign in the Spring in the nineties. There was originally a mural for the company on the wall and I was commisioned to replace it with this imposing sign.

I went on a survey of the site which at the time was scaffolded out and
sheeted up as the builders were ready to take the Gable end down so i took measurements and the best photos i could on different levels of the scaffolding.

The gable end was taken down and the bricks stored under tarpaulins over the winter period and then rebuilt. I had to use lime based paint as would have been used originally in the Victorian era.

The mural has been used in catalogues as a back ground shot, on the YouTube channel as a background shot to depict Victorian Manchester in a Documentary on the Street gangs or Scuttlers that roamed the City.

There is also a print artwork which my daughter bought me from a stall on the Manchester Christmas Markets a couple of years ago.
